Damaged Mauripur bridge becomes death trap

A dilapidated pedestrian bridge on Mauripur Road has become a serious safety hazard for commuters, with residents warning of a major tragedy after a heavy vehicle struck and damaged one of its central pillars five days ago.

The impact reportedly destroyed the pillar and weakened the bridge's foundations, but no repair or safety work has been initiated despite the passage of five days. The bridge is located on one of Karachi's busiest commercial routes, where heavy vehicles, trailers and trucks transporting goods to and from Karachi port operate round the clock.

Thousands of residents of Macher Colony and Lyari use the pedestrian bridge to cross the busy road. With no safe alternative available, commuters continue to risk their lives by using the damaged structure.

Residents said the bridge was already in a poor condition before the accident, with several sections of its stairs and walkway broken. The recent collision has further compromised its structural integrity, they claimed.

Commuters said the bridge shakes noticeably when people walk across it and has tilted to one side, causing considerable fear among pedestrians. "People are forced to recite the Kalma while crossing the bridge because they fear it could collapse at any moment," residents said.

They criticised the relevant authorities for failing to take immediate measures despite the apparent danger. They said crossing the road at ground level was virtually impossible because of the heavy traffic moving at high speed.

Residents demanded that Karachi mayor and the relevant authorities immediately close the bridge until its safety can be certified or undertake emergency repairs.

They also called for a technical assessment and restoration of the damaged pillar and other structural components. A safe alternative route should also be provided to pedestrians during the repair work, they said.
