Rupert Grint to return as Ron Weasley in Broadway's 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'

Actor will reprise role nearly two decades after the 'Harry Potter' films concluded

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter films, is set to return to the beloved role — this time on Broadway.

The actor will reprise his iconic character in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at New York’s Lyric Theatre, with his 17-week engagement scheduled to run from February 2 to May 30, 2027.

According to the BBC, Grint will portray an adult Ron Weasley in the stage production, which continues the story of the original characters years after the events of the books and films.

Grint was just 11 when he was cast as Ron. Announcing his return on Instagram, the actor wrote: “Dusting off the old robes. New York – see you all in February.”

Speaking about reprising the role, Grint said Ron had remained deeply connected to his life.

“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life,” he said, according to Deadline.

“There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.”

The actor added that returning to Broadway in a role that defined such a significant part of his life was “truly exciting”.

Grint is no stranger to the Broadway stage. According to Deadline, he made his Broadway debut in 2014 in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play, appearing alongside Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.

He also made his West End debut in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo, starring opposite Ben Whishaw.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The story follows adult Harry, Ron and Hermione as they navigate parenthood, while their children head to Hogwarts and become caught up in a new magical adventure.

The stage production premiered in London in 2016. According to The Guardian, Cursed Child has sold more than 14 million tickets across its international productions, while its New York production has generated more than $532 million.

Grint will become the second original Harry Potter film cast member to reprise his role in the Broadway production. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in all eight films, is currently appearing as the adult Draco in Cursed Child.

However, fans hoping to see Grint and Felton share the stage will have to wait for another opportunity. According to Deadline, Felton is expected to leave the production on January 3, 2027, before Grint begins his Broadway run the following month.

The producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, also welcomed Grint’s return, saying his performances as Ron helped define for generations what it meant to be a loyal and brave friend in the face of adversity.

“He is not simply revisiting a role from his past. He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded,” they said.

For Grint, however, the return to Ron appears particularly personal. Nearly two decades after the Harry Potter films concluded, the actor will once again step into the shoes of the character he grew up playing — only this time, like Ron, he will return as a father.
