Schedule for AJK prime minister's election issued

The schedule for the election of the prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) was issued on Wednesday, with the polling scheduled to be held in the Legislative Assembly on August 27.
The AJK elections were held in three phases between July 27 and August 10. Of the 45 directly contested constituencies, polling was held in 38, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) securing 25 seats and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) winning 12. The lone MLA of the Awami Dast-o-Bazu party joined hands with the PML-N.
According to the schedule, nomination papers would be submitted from 9:30am to 10:30am, followed by scrutiny of the papers from 10:30am to 10:45am. The list of candidates would be displayed at 11am.
Candidates would be allowed to withdraw their nomination papers between 11am and 11:30am, while the final list of candidates would be issued at noon 12pm.
The election for the AJK prime minister would be held at 12:30pm, while the newly elected prime minister would take the oath between 4pm and 5pm on August 27.

The PML-N has the support of 32 members in the assembly, while the PPP has 14 votes. The PML-N is therefore expected to elect its nominee, party president Shah Ghulam Qadir, as the prime minister on August 27.
A day ago, PML-N AJK Secretary General Chaudhry Tariq Farooq was elected speaker of the Legislative Assembly with 32 votes, while Ahmed Raza Qadri was elected deputy speaker with an equal number of votes.

The PPP candidate for speaker, Qasim Majid, received 13 votes, while its nominee for deputy speaker, Amir Abdul Ghaffar Lone, also secured 13 votes. One PPP vote was declared invalid.
On August 24, forty-six newly elected members of the AJK Legislative Assembly took the oath, formally marking the beginning of the new parliamentary term following the 2026 general elections.
Outgoing speaker Latif Akbar administered the oath to the newly elected lawmakers during the inaugural session of the new assembly. The oath-taking ceremony reflected the changed political balance in the 53-member AJK Legislative Assembly, with the PML-N emerging as the dominant parliamentary force.
