Karachi Police draws line on officers' personal publicity

City Police has banned the use of photographs and portraits of police officers in promotional and publicity material, directing all units to focus official campaigns on the department's performance, public service and achievements rather than individual officers.

According to a circular issued by AIG Karachi Azad Khan, photographs or portraits of any police officer will not be used on banners, billboards, hoardings, posters, standees, backdrops, advertisements or other promotional material.

The ban will apply to material displayed on police vehicles, outside police buildings and at other public places, as well as content shared on social media, electronic media and other media platforms.

All police units and relevant officers have been directed to ensure that official publicity highlights Karachi police's institutional identity, public services, key initiatives, achievements and public-awareness messages instead of promoting any individual. The circular clarified that official publicity was intended to showcase the department's collective performance and strengthen public trust, rather than build the personal profile or public image of any police officer.

However, the order exempts photographs of police martyrs, which may be used with due respect and dignity at official memorial ceremonies, tributes, memorials and other authorised occasions. All concerned officers have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the instructions. The circular warned that responsibility would be fixed and action taken against those found violating the order.

Karachi police said the move was aimed at reinforcing the institution's identity and ensuring that its communication and publicity efforts remained focused on service, performance and the public interest.
