Visually impaired man thrashed at court

Victim says he was called out of courtroom and beaten up

RAWALPINDI:

A visually impaired elderly man was allegedly called out of a courtroom at the Judicial Complex and subjected to assault before being taken to the Kachehri police post.

Visually impaired Ghulam Farooq Abbasi was sitting in the courtroom to appear before Additional District and Sessions Judge Khurram Saleem when a citizen called him outside, telling him that a lawyer was calling him.

When he came out of the courtroom, unidentified people allegedly began beating him, claiming that the elderly man had abused them.

The visually impaired elderly man said he had not abused anyone and had been assaulted without any reason in connection with cases.

He demanded that CCTV footage from the Kachehri gate to the courtroom, including footage from inside and outside the courtroom and the moments when he was called outside and allegedly assaulted, be checked.

He said if it was established that he had abused or misbehaved with anyone, a case should be registered against him. Otherwise, legal action should be taken against the people who called him outside and assaulted him, based on the camera footage.

He said an application in this regard would also be submitted to the sessions judge.
