KARACHI:

As much as 58 barrels of furnace oil that had spilled onto a road in DHA after a leak developed in an underground pipeline were removed and the road was cleared for traffic, officials said.

The leak occurred late Saturday night in the underground furnace oil pipeline running from National Refinery in Korangi to Keamari, between Khayaban-i-Sehar Streets 13 and 14 in DHA Phase VI.

The spill turned the road into what appeared to be a pool of oil, prompting DHA's Security and Vigilance team, Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC), National Refinery staff and police to reach the site. The road was immediately closed to traffic and residents of the affected area were advised to take precautionary measures. An operation was launched simultaneously to remove the spilled furnace oil and plug the leak.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, DHA Security and Vigilance Deputy Director Sajid Mahmood Awan said the incident occurred at around 10pm. The security team reached the site after receiving the information, cordoned off the area and alerted all relevant departments. He said the operation continued throughout the night and, by 9.30am, 58 barrels of furnace oil had been collected from the road and transferred into drums, allowing the road to be cleared.
