'English Only' explores language barriers, self-confidence

Comedy-drama is part of Arts Council's ongoing Alumni Series

The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi presented the comedy-drama "English Only" as part of its ongoing Alumni Series.

The production is the seventh play in the School of Visual and Performing Arts (SOVAPA) Alumni Series. Written by American playwright Sanaz Toosi, the play has been adapted and directed by Awab Farhat.

The cast features Farhan Alam, Kiran Amin, Nafees Qamar, Sanobar Ahmed and Awab Farhat, who delivered strong performances. The 90-minute play is being staged in both Urdu and English.

Set in a lively TOEFL classroom, "English Only" follows students from diverse backgrounds as they struggle to learn a new language while building confidence and finding their voice.

The play explores language barriers, self-doubt and the challenges of expressing oneself effectively. Through humorous misunderstandings and emotional moments, it highlights friendship, communication and the importance of embracing individuality.

Beyond learning a language, the play explores the courage to express oneself, overcome insecurities and find one's own voice.

The production was well received by the audience, who appreciated both the engaging storyline and the cast's performances.

Founded in 1948 as an institution for the advancement of arts and culture, it is among the oldest and most prominent non-governmental organisations in Pakistan in this field. Hosting a high volume of events each year, the council plays a role in preserving and fostering the country's artistic traditions.

In addition to its work in theatre, literature, and music, the Arts Council has expanded into fashion design and filmmaking. It provides subsidised or, in some cases, free access to its auditoriums, studios, and technical facilities for young creatives, addressing the limited availability of affordable training and platforms in these fields.
