Quaid-e-Azam statue unveiled as Pakistan Embassy in Washington marks Independence Day

Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh says Pakistan remains important to the world for its history, geography and diplomacy

The Embassy of Pakistan in Washington marked the country’s 80th Independence Day on Friday with a flag-hoisting ceremony and the unveiling of a statue of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The ceremony, attended by members of the Pakistani-American community, diplomats and media representatives, was led by Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, who hoisted the national flag to the national anthem.

The proceedings began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of messages from the president, prime minister, deputy prime minister and foreign minister, which emphasised national unity and a shared commitment to progress.

In his address, Ambassador Sheikh described Pakistan as a “miracle of history” forged through the freedom struggle of its founding generation.

“Pakistan is a reality today because of the sacrifices rendered by our forefathers during that seven-year struggle — by those who migrated to Pakistan, leaving behind their homes, businesses, and families to build a new homeland,” he said.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a statue of Quaid-e-Azam to mark his upcoming 150th birth anniversary. The ambassador thanked the Quaid-e-Azam Foundation of Houston for donating the statue.

The statue will remain on permanent display at the embassy.

“Today, on the completion of 79 years of independence, the entire nation is grateful to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, whose constitutional struggle and tireless work made the dream of Pakistan a reality,” Ambassador Sheikh said.

He said the Quaid-e-Azam’s leadership had united the Muslims of the subcontinent under one flag and brought them freedom. He urged the Pakistani diaspora to uphold the principles of “Unity, Faith and Discipline” to help ensure a prosperous future.

Turning to domestic affairs, Ambassador Sheikh highlighted what he described as key economic improvements under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership.

“Pakistan’s economic outlook is clearly improving,” he said.

He also paid tribute to the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and police for their sacrifices in maintaining national stability.
