Bangladesh dominate day two despite fiery Starc-Miraz incident

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc and Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz were involved in a heated on-field exchange during the second day of the opening Test at Marrara Stadium on Friday.

The incident took place during the fifth delivery of Starc’s 21st over when Miraz pushed the ball towards point and called for a quick single. The pair collided while the Bangladesh batter attempted to complete the run, leading to a brief confrontation.

Under the Laws of Cricket, bowlers must avoid entering the protected area of the pitch during their follow-through, while batters are also expected to avoid running through the centre of the wicket.

Miraz initially appeared to be watching Starc before shifting his focus towards the ball, only to find himself almost face-to-face with the Australian pacer.

Umpire Kumar Dharmasena quickly stepped in and warned the Bangladesh all-rounder against running on the protected area.

Television cameras captured the exchange, with Starc telling Miraz: “It’s my follow-through, now your follow-through. Get off the wicket.”

Miraz responded by explaining that he had been tracking the ball and had not noticed Starc in his path.

The situation cooled quickly and did not develop into a more serious confrontation.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, dominated proceedings with the bat, finishing the day on 351-6 and establishing a commanding 153-run lead after dismissing Australia for 198.

Opener Tanzid Hasan produced a memorable innings of 101 to become the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test century on Australian soil.

He shared a 102-run stand with Mominul Haque, who made 49, before combining with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for a 93-run partnership.

Shanto contributed 84, while veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim added 36. Miraz remained unbeaten on 32 at stumps as Bangladesh strengthened their grip on the opening Test.
