Roads, parks illuminated for Independence Day

Development authorities and horticulture agencies have carried out extensive beautification across Lahore and other districts for Independence Day celebrations.

Roads, green belts and public spaces have been decorated in a green-and-white theme along with parks and landscaped areas.

Government buildings were also illuminated with decorative lights, adding to the festive atmosphere on the eve of Independence Day.

In Lahore, flags, buntings and green-and-white decoration material remained in demand in commercial as well as residential areas for several days.

Markets and neighbourhoods were decorated with national flags and lights, with families also decorating their homes and vehicles for the occasion.

Children are among the most enthusiastic participants, buying flags, badges, caps, toys and other items.

The city's official programme included the main Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony at Hazuri Bagh. The Parks and Horticulture Agency (PHA)also planned a flag-hoisting ceremony at Jilani Park. At Greater Iqbal Park, green, white and crescent-themed lighting was arranged around Minar-e-Pakistan for visitors expected to attend the celebrations.

Major thoroughfares including Jail Road, Mall Road, Canal Road and Main Boulevard were illuminated.

The Punjab Walled Cities and Heritage Areas Authority also planned cultural activities along with the National History Museum at Greater Iqbal Park for children and families.

On the other hand, Punjab Police intensified security and enforcement measures with more than 28,000 personnel deployed across the province for over 300 events and to prevent violations including one-wheeling, firing and road blocks.

The Lahore police stepped up a crackdown on one-wheelers. According to a spokesperson, 31 one-wheelers have been arrested and 29 cases registered so far in August.

CCPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana said additional teams would be deployed on major roads to protect citizens and ensure traffic flow.

CTO Abdul Rahim Shirazi ordered the blacklisting of all motorcycles involved in one-wheeling since last year. More than 120 motorcycles have been blacklisted and will be detected through Safe City Authority cameras.

The official said there would be no room for stunts or hooliganism on Lahore's roads during Independence Day celebrations.

According to Punjab Police, security checking will be conducted through walk-through gates and metal detectors. More than 8,000 personnel will be deployed in Lahore.
