Nick Reiner faces fresh allegation in parents Rob and Michele Reiner murder case

Nick Reiner has been indicted in connection with the deaths of his parents, Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, with prosecutors adding a new special circumstance allegation that could significantly affect the case.

A Los Angeles County grand jury returned the indictment on July 20, and the document was unsealed on August 12. Reiner, 32, faces two counts of murder along with special circumstance allegations involving multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. Prosecutors also allege that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, identified as a knife.

The new lying in wait allegation is a significant development because it gives prosecutors another basis for pursuing the most serious potential penalties available under California law. Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead inside their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responding to the property discovered two victims and determined that the deaths were homicides. Nick Reiner was arrested later that day in Los Angeles and was subsequently charged with two counts of murder.

Rob Reiner was one of Hollywood's most recognisable filmmakers and actors. His career included directing acclaimed films such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men. He was also widely known for playing Michael Stivic on All in the Family, a performance that helped establish him as a major television figure before his directing career expanded.

Michele Reiner worked as a photographer and producer and had been married to Rob Reiner for decades. The couple's deaths shocked the entertainment industry, with tributes continuing after the killings.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office previously said Reiner faced the possibility of death or life imprisonment without parole if convicted as originally charged. The newly unsealed indictment adds the lying in wait allegation, while prosecutors have not indicated in the latest reports whether they will seek the death penalty.
