Shahood Alvi says remarks on wives' 'hygiene' were taken out of context

Actor Shahood Alvi has clarified his recent remarks about wives’ hygiene, saying his comments on a morning show were taken out of context and do not reflect his personal views about women.

He recently faced criticism over comments he made during a morning show, where he discussed the way some husbands perceive their wives. During the conversation, he suggested that women who spend much of their day in the kitchen may smell of garlic and ginger, while working women tend to make more of an effort to look presentable and wear perfume.

Addressing the criticism, Alvi shared a statement explaining that the viral clips did not represent the full context of the discussion. “I came across videos resurfacing about me in which my words have been taken out of context and twisted for views,” he said.

“If you watch the entire show, a woman called on live TV and asked why her husband doesn’t pay attention to her and is always on his phone. We were all discussing how the majority of men in our society think. This has nothing to do with my views on women,” he clarified.

Alvi also brought the discussion back to his own family life, stressing that he believes in empowering women and supporting their confidence and independence. “I empower and support strong and confident women, and that’s how I’ve treated my wife and daughters all along,” he said.

He further claimed that he has always made sure his wife has the support she needs at home, adding, “I have provided my wife with all the household help she needs. I respect everything she has done for me.”

The actor also criticised the way the remarks were being circulated online, arguing that selective clips can create a misleading impression of a person's views.

“The narrative currently circulating does not reflect what I actually said or believe. Shame on people who try to tarnish one’s reputation just for views,” Alvi wrote, while asking media platforms and networks not to take his words out of context.

Several celebrities and fans appeared to support Alvi following his clarification.

Actress Zhalay Sarhadi defended him in the comments, writing, “Those who know you know that about you! Let the haters wag their tongues, which is the only thing they can do! Love and respect you always!”

Alvi’s sister also came to his defence, commenting, “You’ve always been the best brother.”

While Alvi’s clarification has offered his perspective on the controversy, the incident has also reignited a broader conversation about the expectations placed on women who manage households.
