'One Night Only' opens with strong previews as 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' targets another record-breaking weekend

Universal’s romantic comedy One Night Only has made a promising start at the box office, earning $1.35 million from Thursday night screenings and special preview events ahead of its theatrical debut.

Directed by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind Anyone But You, the new rom-com stars Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. The preview performance is similar to the early numbers recorded by Anyone But You, which earned $1.35 million in Thursday previews before becoming a major holiday box office success with a strong theatrical run.

One Night Only earned approximately $750,000 from traditional Thursday night previews and is opening in 3,012 theatres. The film is expected to attract audiences looking for a romantic comedy option, with projections suggesting an opening weekend above $10 million.

Meanwhile, Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its record-breaking theatrical performance. The Tom Holland and Zendaya-led superhero movie earned $29 million on Thursday, bringing its domestic total to $510.8 million.

The film became the fastest movie ever to cross $500 million at the domestic box office, reaching the milestone in just seven days and surpassing the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame. Industry projections suggest the superhero sequel could earn around $144 million during its second weekend.

Other new releases this weekend include Searchlight’s comedy sequel Super Troopers 3, which is expected to open in the single-digit millions, and Eli Roth’s horror film Ice Cream Man, which is targeting a low single-digit debut.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day continuing its strong momentum, new releases including One Night Only are hoping to benefit from increased movie theatre attendance during the final stretch of the summer box office season.
