'Shared resolve for peace and security': President Zardari, PM Shehbaz hail Makkah defence pact

Say pact strengthens collective deterrence and defence ties, calling it a milestone for regional peace and stability

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday hailed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, describing it as a reflection of a shared resolve for peace and security that would strengthen collective deterrence and deepen defence cooperation among the three brotherly countries.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the agreement, reaffirming their commitment to collective security, defence cooperation and regional stability.

The agreement establishes a framework for collective deterrence against acts of aggression. It stipulates that an armed attack against any one of the three signatory states will be regarded as an attack against all three.

In a post on X, President Zardari welcomed the signing of the agreement in the holy city of Makkah, describing it as an important contribution to peace, security and stability in the region and beyond.

“This landmark pact strengthens collective deterrence, deepens defence cooperation and reaffirms the shared commitment of the three brotherly nations to a secure and prosperous future,” he said.

The president also appreciated the role of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in advancing the initiative, saying it built on the enduring bonds of brotherhood and strategic partnership.

“May Allah Almighty bless this historic agreement and grant lasting peace, security and prosperity to our nations and the Muslim Ummah,” he added.

In a separate post on X, PM Shehbaz said he was honoured to sign the agreement alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Describing the pact as “a shared resolve for peace and security” among the three brotherly nations, the prime minister said the agreement, signed in the shadow of the Haramain, would remain “a shield of peace for generations to come” and bring prosperity to the three countries as well as the Muslim Ummah.

The prime minister also acknowledged the efforts of Field Marshal Munir, saying his “untiring efforts and utmost dedication” had contributed immensely to the initiative.
