Reddit expands AI moderation with permission to remove posts and comments

Reddit is introducing AI-powered moderation tool that can report or remove content based on subreddit rules

Reddit is expanding its use of artificial intelligence by introducing a new moderation system capable of automatically reporting or removing posts and comments that violate subreddit rules.

The new feature, called Rules Hub, gives moderators the option to use large language models to assess whether content matches the intent of a community's rules, rather than relying solely on keyword detection.

According to The Verge, the tool is designed to better understand natural language, context and edge cases that traditional automated systems may miss.

Reddit has historically relied on volunteer moderators alongside its Automoderator, commonly known as Automod, which enables moderators to create rules triggered by specific words or patterns.

More recently, the platform introduced Post Check, an AI-powered feature that warns users when a draft may breach community guidelines but does not stop them from publishing.

With Rules Hub, moderators remain in control of how AI is used. They can choose which rules are enforced automatically and decide what action should be taken when the system identifies a potential violation.

Available options include reporting content for human review, removing it automatically or taking no action.

According to Reddit, the feature has been tested over several months by both new and experienced moderators across more than 700 communities, including members of the platform's Mod Council Network.

The optional tool is now available for all newly created subreddits, with Reddit planning a wider rollout across the platform later in 2026. A specific release date has not yet been announced.

Early feedback from moderators has reportedly been mixed. According to the report, one moderator described the system as "hit and miss", while another said their moderation team only trusted it to flag potentially problematic content rather than remove it automatically.
