Spotify music platform reaches historic milestone
Music streaming platform Spotify has reached a major milestone, becoming the first audio streaming service to cross 300 million paid (Premium) subscribers.
The company announced the achievement while releasing its financial results for the second quarter of 2026, showing continued growth in both users and revenue.
Spotify said its Premium subscribers increased by 9% compared with the same period last year, reaching 300 million. Its Monthly Active Users (MAUs) also rose 12% to 777 million, as more people continued using the platform to stream music, podcasts and audiobooks.
The company earned 4.8 billion in revenue during the quarter, a 14% increase from a year earlier. It also reported an operating income of 655 million, while its gross margin improved to 33.4%, the highest in the company's history.
Spotify said it has continued adding new features to make it easier for users to discover music, create playlists and connect with artists and creators.
Co-Chief Executive Alex Norstrom said Spotify has become part of people's daily lives, whether they are commuting, working out, studying or relaxing.
Co-Chief Executive Gustav Soderstrom said the company would continue investing in new technology and products to improve the user experience and create more opportunities for artists and creators.
Spotify offers DRM-protected audio content, including over 100 million songs and over 7 million podcast titles, from record labels and media companies. Operating as a freemium service, the basic features are free with advertisements and limited control, while additional features, such as offline listening and commercial-free listening, are offered via paid subscriptions. Users can search for music based on artist, album, or genre, and can create, edit, and share playlists. It offers some social media features such as messaging, creating profiles, following friends and shared playlists.
