Mockumentary inspired series will centre on Gorilla Grodd investigation led by Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen

Mary Holland has joined the cast of DC Studios' upcoming Jimmy Olsen television series, taking on a leading role in the HBO Max production that expands the world established in this summer's blockbuster Superman. The actor, writer and comedian has been cast as Sandra, becoming the female lead opposite the previously announced Jimmy Tatro in the highly anticipated spin off.

According to Deadline, Holland's casting marks another significant addition to the growing ensemble for the series, which will adopt a mockumentary style inspired by true crime documentaries. While HBO Max and DC Studios declined to comment on the casting report, sources close to the production confirmed Holland's involvement.

The new series places Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen at the centre of the story. Skyler Gisondo, who portrayed the character in James Gunn's Superman, will reprise the role as the fictional host of the documentary style series. The project is expected to explore unusual events within the DC Universe through Jimmy's investigative perspective rather than following a traditional superhero format.

Season one will reportedly focus on Gorilla Grodd, one of DC Comics' most recognisable villains. Jimmy Tatro has been cast to portray the super intelligent telepathic ape, whose origins trace back to 1959 when the character was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino. Gorilla Grodd has long been one of The Flash's greatest adversaries and possesses formidable psychic abilities after an encounter with an alien spacecraft.

The series represents another step in DC Studios' effort to broaden its interconnected universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Rather than concentrating solely on headline superheroes, the studio is also developing projects centred on supporting characters and lesser explored corners of the DC mythology.

Behind the camera, the project reunites Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creative team behind the acclaimed mockumentary series American Vandal. The pair will write, executive produce and serve as showrunners, bringing the same satirical documentary style that earned praise for their previous Netflix series. James Gunn and Peter Safran are also executive producers, while Warner Bros Television is producing the project alongside DC Studios.

Holland brings an extensive comedy background to the production. She currently appears in the CBS comedy Ghosts and Netflix's reboot of The Little House on the Prairie. Her recent screen credits also include The Big Door Prize, Nightbitch, Self Reliance, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window and Senior Year. She is also filming The Earliest Show.

The Jimmy Olsen series continues DC Studios' strategy of expanding characters introduced in Superman into standalone stories that explore different genres within the same shared universe. Rather than presenting another conventional superhero adventure, the production aims to combine comedy, mystery and documentary storytelling while examining one of DC's strangest villains.
