Lori Petty reveals Patrick Swayze’s wild skydiving habit while filming Point Break

Lori Petty is looking back on her experience filming the 1991 action classic Point Break and sharing unforgettable memories of her late co-star Patrick Swayze.

The actress, who starred alongside Keanu Reeves and Swayze in Kathryn Bigelow’s cult favourite, recalled the fun and adventurous atmosphere behind the scenes as the film celebrates its 35th anniversary with a new 4K restoration arriving in theatres.

Petty described making Point Break as a dream experience, praising the cast’s chemistry and the excitement of filming action sequences, surfing scenes and training sessions. She joked that working alongside Reeves and Swayze made her role particularly enjoyable.

The actress said Swayze stood out for his fearless personality and love of physical challenges. According to Petty, the actor would sometimes go skydiving before work despite concerns from the studio. She recalled that Swayze combined his passion for dancing and extreme sports by performing what she described as “ballet in the air” while skydiving.

Petty remembered Swayze, who died in 2009 at the age of 57, as a dedicated performer who pushed himself in everything he did. She praised his kindness, energy and commitment to exploring new challenges.

The actress also reflected on filming in Hawaii, describing the experience as peaceful and memorable, with the cast enjoying early morning surf sessions, sunsets and the beauty of the location.

Although Petty did not expect Point Break to become a lasting success, the film went on to become a beloved cult classic. The movie follows FBI agent Johnny Utah, played by Reeves, as he investigates a group of surfing bank robbers led by Swayze’s character Bodhi.

The 4K restoration of Point Break will return to theatres on Aug. 16 and 19.
