Massive Attack members banned from Singapore after displaying Palestinian flag at concert

Two members of British trip-hop group Massive Attack have been banned from re-entering Singapore after displaying a Palestinian flag and shouting "Free Palestine" during the band's concert in the city-state, authorities have confirmed.

According to a joint statement from the Singapore Police Force and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the two musicians were issued stern warnings after an investigation found they had breached laws governing the display of foreign national emblems and public support for political causes. Authorities also announced that Massive Attack will no longer be permitted to perform in Singapore because future performance applications by the band will not be approved.

The incident occurred during Massive Attack's July 29 concert at The Star Theatre, where videos shared on social media showed two members unfurling a Palestinian flag on stage as the audience cheered. One of the musicians also chanted "Free Palestine", prompting an official investigation. Singapore prohibits the public display of foreign flags and political symbols without a permit, with officials arguing such acts could undermine the country's racial and religious harmony.

The band had not publicly responded to Singapore's decision at the time of publication. The case is the latest example of artists facing official repercussions over pro-Palestinian expressions during live performances, as cultural and political debates surrounding the war in Gaza continue to play out on international stages.
