Mahershala Ali confirms he is done with Marvel’s Blade after years of delays

Mahershala Ali has confirmed that he will no longer star in Marvel Studios’ long-awaited Blade reboot, ending years of uncertainty surrounding the superhero project.

The two-time Oscar winner revealed that the film is no longer moving forward with him attached and suggested Marvel’s lack of commitment played a role in the decision.

In an interview with GQ, Ali said he believes the project was simply not meant to happen, explaining that if Marvel had wanted to make the movie, it would have moved ahead. His comments came after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously expressed disappointment over the company’s inability to complete the Blade reboot starring Ali.

Marvel first announced the Blade reboot in 2019, with Ali set to portray the iconic vampire hunter previously played by Wesley Snipes. The project experienced multiple production setbacks, including the departure of directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange. Tariq exited the film in 2022, reportedly due to creative differences, shortly before production was expected to begin.

Ali had spent significant time preparing for the role, including extensive sword training and physical preparation. Director Bassam Tariq revealed that the actor’s training for Blade helped him develop skills later used in their upcoming film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.

The cancellation of Ali’s involvement follows another recent Marvel setback, with Disney+ ending plans for Wonder Man season 2 despite previously announcing a renewal.

Although Ali’s version of Blade will not continue, the character remains part of Marvel’s history. Wesley Snipes recently returned as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, while Ali previously made a brief voice appearance connected to the character in Eternals.
