'The Odyssey' sparks Sicily tourism boom with $500 million economic boost

Christopher Nolan’s 'The Odyssey' is driving tourism to Sicily’s Favignana, with revenue projected to top $500 million

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is delivering more than box office success, with the film now expected to significantly boost tourism in Sicily.

Favignana, the Italian island that served as the filming location for Ithaca in the epic adaptation, is projected to generate more than $500 million in long-term tourism revenue as interest from international visitors continues to grow.

Located off Sicily’s western coast, Favignana was transformed into the legendary home of Odysseus during production. Director Christopher Nolan and production designer Ruth De Jong selected the island’s historic Castello di Santa Caterina as the stand-in for Ithaca’s palace, while nearby beaches, coves and the small islet of Preveto were also featured in the film.

Following the release of The Odyssey trailer in May, tourism campaigns highlighting the filming locations began appearing across travel platforms, including Airbnb listings promoting accommodations near sites featured in the movie. According to Sicilia Film Commission chief Nicola Tarantino, the film is expected to attract a substantial increase in international visitors, particularly from the United States.

Initial estimates suggest The Odyssey could generate approximately $287 million in tourism revenue for Favignana over the next three years, with long-term projections exceeding $500 million. The anticipated economic impact is expected to surpass the tourism boost generated by HBO’s The White Lotus season 2, which significantly increased visitor numbers to Taormina after filming there.

Italy has also become one of the film’s strongest international markets, ranking fourth worldwide at the box office with more than $35 million in ticket sales. Officials believe the combination of Sicily’s cultural heritage and Nolan’s global audience will continue driving tourism and international attention to the island for years to come.
