Yahya Abdul Mateen II breaks silence after ‘Wonder Man’ season 2 cancellation
Yahya Abdul Mateen II has responded publicly after Marvel Television's Wonder Man was unexpectedly cancelled, sharing an optimistic message with fans despite the series losing its previously announced second season renewal.
The Emmy winning actor took to Instagram after reports confirmed that Disney+ would no longer move forward with a second season of Wonder Man. Although the comedy drama had been renewed earlier in 2026, the project ultimately stalled before a writers' room was established, bringing its future to an abrupt halt.
The actor also thanked audiences who embraced the series during its first season. He said seeing viewers connect with the show had become his favourite part of the experience, revealing that he even watched online reaction videos alongside fans. According to Abdul Mateen, many people reached out to tell him the series inspired them not to give up, something he described as deeply meaningful.
"The show worked. And that is my favourite thing about it," he wrote, adding that the genuine support from viewers and personal interactions with fans made the experience worthwhile. He ended his message on a hopeful note by thanking audiences for watching before joking, "See you at the Emmys."
Wonder Man debuted on Disney+ in January 2026 and starred Abdul Mateen as Simon Williams, an aspiring actor secretly balancing life with extraordinary superpowers. Sir Ben Kingsley reprised his Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Trevor Slattery, while the ensemble cast also featured X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Buric, Arian Moayed, Josh Gad and Olivia Thirlby.
The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest. Cretton directed the opening instalments, while Guest served as showrunner. Critics responded positively to the show, which earned a 91% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and received praise for blending comedy, character driven storytelling and superhero action in a fresh way.
The cancellation also arrives during a successful awards season for Abdul Mateen. Earlier this month, he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in Wonder Man, adding another major career milestone following his Emmy victory for Watchmen.
Although the series has reached its end, Marvel fans may not have seen the last of Simon Williams. According to an individual familiar with the situation, the cancellation applies only to the standalone series. The characters introduced in Wonder Man, including Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery, remain available for future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects should the studio choose to bring them back.
