Sir Elton John has celebrated a remarkable personal milestone, marking 36 years of sobriety with an uplifting message that resonated with fans around the world. The music legend shared the update through social media, posting a photograph of himself smiling outdoors while holding a glass of his own 0.0% sparkling wine, accompanied by a simple but meaningful reflection on his journey.

"36 years sober today. Raising a 0% glass to life. Grateful for every single day," Elton John wrote alongside the post. He also shared the image on his Instagram Stories, pairing it with his classic hit "I’m Still Standing", a song that has long been associated with resilience and perseverance.

The milestone comes during a period in which the iconic performer has increasingly spoken about recovery, wellness and embracing a healthier lifestyle. Earlier in 2026, Elton John and his husband David Furnish introduced Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs, a premium alcohol free sparkling wine designed to offer an inclusive option for celebrations. The royal blue bottle carries his signature "E" star logo and reflects his commitment to creating products that align with his personal values.

When announcing the launch, Elton John explained that the project was inspired by the belief that everyone should be able to share celebratory moments together. He described the sparkling wine as capturing the elegance and joy of a traditional Blanc de Blancs while remaining completely alcohol free, adding that it represented inclusion and togetherness.

Elton John's recovery story has become one of the defining chapters of his extraordinary life and career. His battles with addiction were explored in the acclaimed biographical film Rocketman, which portrayed the singer confronting years of dependence on alcohol, cocaine and other substances before seeking help. The film highlighted the emotional struggles that accompanied worldwide fame and the determination required to rebuild his life.

The award winning artist has also discussed those difficult years in previous interviews. Reflecting on his past lifestyle, he explained that constant luxury, extravagant spending and the pressures that accompanied international superstardom gradually distanced him from the life he once knew. He recalled suffering frightening physical symptoms, including chest pains and extended periods without sleep, before ultimately recognising that dramatic change was necessary.

Since achieving sobriety in 1990, Elton John has regularly acknowledged the importance of recovery and the support he received along the way. Each anniversary has become an opportunity for him to express gratitude while encouraging others facing similar challenges. Last year, after reaching 35 years sober, he thanked supporters for their love and encouragement, continuing a tradition of openly celebrating recovery rather than hiding it.

Now 79, Elton John remains active professionally despite scaling back major touring commitments following the conclusion of his FAREWELL YELLOW BRICK ROAD TOUR. Alongside new business ventures and continued musical projects, he has remained an outspoken advocate for health, inclusion and charitable causes.
