Hank Green admits using ChatGPT after accidentally reading AI prompt feedback left in his script

Popular science creator and author Hank Green has responded after a clip from one of his YouTube videos fuelled online speculation that he had accidentally read artificial intelligence prompt feedback aloud during filming. The moment quickly spread across social media, prompting criticism from viewers and renewed debate about the use of generative AI in online content creation.

The controversy began when viewers pointed to a line in Green's video that sounded similar to feedback commonly generated during AI assisted drafting. Some interpreted the phrase "I appreciate the pushback" as evidence that an AI generated note had accidentally remained in the script before recording.

The clip circulated widely across social media platforms, with many questioning whether Green, who has previously spoken critically about low effort AI content, had relied on generative AI to write his videos.

Green addressed the discussion directly on X, where he reviewed his production process and acknowledged that he had used ChatGPT while preparing the video. However, he rejected claims that the specific line at the centre of the controversy had been copied from AI generated notes.

"I produced this under a ton of pressure so I went and checked my process from start to finish. I did use ChatGPT for research on this script and watching it I definitely get an AI feel, so I think it's fair to say I was relying too much on generated notes. That's a thing I've been doing and it's a bad habit at a time when I've overcommitted myself," Green wrote.

He went on to clarify that the disputed phrase was not present in either his research notes or the final script.

"But I just went to the notes and the script for this and neither contain the 'I appreciate the pushback' line, so that particular moment was an ad lib in reference to my guest pushing back on me saying that words are purely made up," Green explained.

While Green disputed the original accusation, he openly accepted criticism over his broader workflow. He admitted that relying on AI generated research notes had become a habit brought on by heavy workloads and time pressure, adding that he believed the criticism about that aspect of the process was fair.

The response has generated mixed reactions online. Some viewers praised Green for publicly acknowledging his use of ChatGPT and offering a detailed explanation of his production process rather than ignoring the controversy. Others argued that educational creators should avoid depending on AI generated research because large language models can produce inaccurate or misleading information if their outputs are not independently verified.

The discussion is particularly notable because Green has frequently commented on artificial intelligence and online misinformation. Earlier this year, he criticised what he described as low effort AI generated content flooding social media, arguing that creators should offer original perspectives instead of simply publishing machine generated material.

Green's latest comments suggest he intends to reassess his own workflow following the backlash. Although he maintained that the viral clip had been misunderstood, he also acknowledged that using ChatGPT for research had influenced the feel of the finished video and accepted responsibility for leaning too heavily on generated notes.
