Kevin Feige says Ryan Coogler’s call about casting David Jonsson as Black Panther left him emotional

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed the emotional moment director Ryan Coogler told him he had found the next Black Panther, with David Jonsson now set to lead Black Panther 3.

Speaking to Empire, Feige recalled that Marvel had planned to begin searching for a new actor to take on the iconic role only after Coogler completed the awards campaign for Sinners. However, those plans changed when the director called him with confidence that he had already found the right successor.

According to Feige, Coogler introduced Jonsson by highlighting his previous work before arranging a private meeting with the actor. After meeting Jonsson, the filmmaker reportedly called Feige again to say he was convinced the actor was the perfect choice to inherit the Black Panther mantle.

Feige said the conversation deeply moved him, admitting he “got chills” and became emotional while Coogler described Jonsson as “the guy” and “a good man.” He added that Marvel Studios had kept the casting decision secret for nearly six months before revealing it publicly.

The announcement was officially made during Marvel Studios’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Coogler confirmed that David Jonsson will portray T’Challa II in Black Panther 3. Jonsson thanked Coogler, Feige and the Marvel team, calling the opportunity both a privilege and an honour.

The casting marks a new chapter for the Black Panther franchise following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020. Letitia Wright, who took over as Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, also welcomed Jonsson to the franchise and praised his casting, while teasing that fans will see further growth in Shuri’s leadership journey in the upcoming film.
