Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man has been canceled at Disney+, ending plans for a second season despite the streaming platform previously announcing a renewal.

According to an exclusive report from Variety, Disney announced the Wonder Man season 2 renewal in March, about two months after the series premiered. However, sources told the outlet that a writers’ room for the second season was never opened and the show’s writing team has since moved on to other projects.

The Marvel series starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring actor trying to revive his career, and Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, the former actor known for his controversial connection to the Marvel universe. The season 1 cast also featured X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby.

Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Guest serving as showrunner, Wonder Man received strong reviews from critics after its Disney+ debut. The series holds a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Despite positive reviews, Disney did not release official viewership numbers for the Marvel show. The series briefly appeared on Nielsen’s streaming top 10 originals chart, reaching No. 8 during its debut week before dropping from the rankings.

Although Wonder Man season 2 will not move forward, sources indicated that characters introduced in the series could still appear in future Marvel projects.

The cancellation follows Marvel’s recent shift toward fewer multi-season Disney+ shows. Several live-action Marvel series, including WandaVision, Hawkeye and Moon Knight, were designed as limited series, while Loki remains one of the few Marvel shows to receive multiple seasons.
