Marvel finally breaks the silence on Shang-Chi 2 development

Shang-Chi 2 gets a positive update from director Destin Daniel Cretton, but Marvel fans may face a longer wait

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has opened up about his growing relationship with Marvel Studios, explaining why he continues to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite initially having little interest in directing superhero films.

Speaking to ScreenRant ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Cretton credited Marvel Studios' collaborative environment and passionate creative team for making him feel at home. The filmmaker said the studio has given him the freedom to tell character-driven stories while supporting his personal creative vision on a blockbuster scale.

Cretton joined the MCU with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), one of Marvel's most successful post-Avengers: Endgame releases. He later co-created Disney+'s Wonder Man and is currently developing Shang-Chi 2. Before taking on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Cretton had also been attached to direct what was originally announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before the project evolved into Avengers: Doomsday.

According to Cretton, the decision to leave the Avengers project came after discussions with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, as he felt he was not the right creative fit for the story being developed. During the same conversation, Feige introduced the possibility of directing the next Spider-Man film.

The director also praised Tom Holland's creative involvement, revealing that the actor actively contributed ideas during the writing process. Cretton described Holland as a collaborative partner who understands filmmaking beyond acting, with several of the actor's suggestions making their way into the final film.

Cretton added that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will remain faithful to the emotional ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, exploring Peter Parker's loneliness after Doctor Strange's memory spell. He said that continuing those consequences was one of the main reasons he accepted the project.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to arrive in theatres on July 31.
