Ancient statues unearthed during Lea Market excavation

KARACHI:

Two ancient-style statues were discovered during excavation work in Lea Market, Old City Area, prompting authorities to launch an expert review to determine their historical significance.

According to officials, restoration work at Lea Market was under way under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) when the statues were unearthed. Both artifacts were found in intact condition and have since been moved to another location for preservation.

In a statement shared on his official handle on "X", formerly Twitter, City Mayor Murtaza Wahab said that archaeology experts would examine the statues to establish their historical authenticity and age. Cultural authorities have also been contacted to assess their significance and determine whether they bear any resemblance to previously discovered artifacts in the region.

Officials said excavation at the site is being carried out with caution to ensure that any additional findings are preserved safely. Scientific analysis will also be conducted as part of a comprehensive investigation involving multiple departments.

The KMC said further details will be shared with the media once the examination process is complete. Initial observations suggest that the statues resemble ancient figurines previously found in the subcontinent.
