At least 11 dead in last 24 hours in rain-related incidents nationwide: NDMA

Met department says Karachi likely to receive light rain, drizzle over next two days

At least 11 people were killed and 25 injured in rain-related incidents across the country over the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide monsoon death toll to 97 since late June, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Sunday. 

According to a daily situation report issued by the NDMA, Punjab recorded the highest number of casualties during the reporting period, with seven deaths and 20 injuries, followed by Sindh with two deaths and two injuries, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with one death and three injuries, and Gilgit-Baltistan with one death.

According to the authority, house collapses accounted for 54.5% of the fatalities, followed by drowning (27.3%) and lightning strikes (18.2%).

The cumulative toll from June 26 to July 25 now stands at 97 deaths and 297 injuries nationwide. K-P has reported the highest number of fatalities with 52 deaths, followed by Punjab reporting 29 deaths, Azad Jammu and Kashmir reporting seven, Balochistan recording 6, Sindh with two deaths, and G-B with one death reported. 

The NDMA said 22 houses were damaged in the past 24 hours, including 17 partially damaged and five destroyed, while eight livestock were lost. Since the start of the monsoon season, 447 houses have been damaged—338 partially and 109 completely—and 269 livestock have perished.

It added that 0.9 kilometres of roads were damaged by landslides and rising water levels in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, disrupting traffic at several locations, with restoration work underway.

PMD nationwide weather advisory

In a separate weather advisory, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast scattered rain, wind and thunderstorms across parts of the country over the next 24 hours and warned of flash flooding in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan and northeastern Balochistan, as well as urban flooding in parts of southeastern Sindh.

The PMD said scattered rain, wind and thunderstorms are expected over the upper catchments of major rivers, Islamabad, Kashmir and G-B, as well as parts of K-P, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan during the next 24 hours.

The department said no flood-generating rainfall is expected until July 28, but a fresh spell of monsoon rains is likely to begin from July 29 over the upper catchments of major rivers, Islamabad, upper Punjab, K-P, Kashmir and G-B.

The NDMA said provincial authorities distributed 386 relief items over the past 24 hours, while rescue teams carried out five rescue operations, saving eight people. Since the beginning of the monsoon season, authorities have conducted 130 rescue operations, rescuing 3,841 people nationwide.

PMD forecasts light rain in Karachi 

Light rain and drizzle are expected at isolated locations in Karachi over the next two days as the PMD forecast mostly cloudy, hot and humid weather for the city while warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of interior Sindh. 

According to the PMD, Karachi is expected to remain mostly cloudy, hot and humid on Sunday, with light rain and drizzle likely at a few places. On Monday and Tuesday, the city is forecast to experience partly cloudy and humid conditions, with occasional strong winds and the possibility of drizzle at isolated locations.

The Met Office said a low-pressure system over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining areas persists but is expected to weaken by Monday. However, strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea continue to penetrate the southern and central parts of Pakistan, sustaining wet weather across the region.

Under the influence of this weather system, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Sanghar and Matiari are likely to receive thunderstorms with moderate rainfall at a few places and heavy rainfall at isolated locations on Sunday and Monday.

Meanwhile, Ghotki, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Sukkur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazirabad and Hyderabad are also expected to receive light to moderate rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms.

The PMD warned that strong winds and lightning could damage vulnerable structures, including weak buildings, while heavy rainfall may trigger urban flooding in parts of rural Sindh.

The department advised residents, particularly those in vulnerable areas, to remain updated on weather advisories and to take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The season's first monsoon spell drenched Karachi on Friday, bringing light, moderate and heavy rain to different parts of the city as the PMD predicted more rain accompanied by thunder and lightning over the next two days.

The rain began in the city's outskirts, including in Gulshan-e-Maymar, Surjani Town, Ahsanabad and Manghopir, in the evening before gradually spreading to other areas.

Meanwhile, light to heavy rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar, Nazimabad, Jamshed Road, DHA, Mahmoodabad, Empress Market, Bohri Bazaar, Jehangir Park, the Mobile Market and surrounding localities, bringing significant relief from the heat and humidity.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah declared a high alert across the province on Friday, in view of the forecast of heavy rainfall. He directed local government institutions, the Water Board, and district administrations to remain operational round the clock.

CM Shah reassured that the affected areas were being continuously monitored, all institutions remained fully mobilised, and no negligence in drainage operations would be tolerated.
