'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' promises a grittier Peter Parker

Tom Holland says audiences can expect a more grounded and emotionally driven story when they return to Peter Parker's world in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', the latest instalment in Sony and Marvel's blockbuster superhero franchise, which is set to arrive in cinemas on July 31.

Speaking to Reuters, Holland described the film as a departure from conventional superhero adventures, saying it focuses on loneliness, vulnerability and the importance of seeking help rather than relying solely on extraordinary powers.

"The movie kind of serves as this cautionary tale about living a life alone, the importance of community, and how sometimes the bravest thing to do in life is to ask for help," Holland said. "It's definitely more grounded; it's grittier, it's more emotional, but that doesn't mean we sacrifice the humour and the fun," he added.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is set several years after the events of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'. The story follows Peter Parker as he struggles with the consequences of Doctor Strange's memory-erasing spell, which wiped all memories of Peter and his identity as Spider-Man from those closest to him.

Among those affected are Peter's girlfriend, Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson, portrayed by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. Both characters have no recollection of their shared past with Peter, leaving the young superhero to navigate a life marked by profound isolation.

The film also brings together several familiar faces from across the Marvel universe. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as the Punisher, creating a crossover between Spider-Man's world and characters previously seen in Marvel's 'Daredevil' series and Netflix's 'The Punisher'. Although the relationship between Peter Parker and the Punisher begins on uneasy terms, the two eventually develop an unexpected bond.

Bernthal said the evolving relationship reflects a broader human theme. "I think it's always interesting when you have two characters who are just trying to push everything away. That's sort of the opposite of what being a human being is, and sometimes it just sort of takes over, and all of a sudden you find yourself caring about someone you swore you never would," he said.

The crossover extends beyond the Punisher, with Florence Pugh returning as Yelena Belova and Mark Ruffalo once again appearing as Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk.

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the film, however, remains the undisclosed role of 'Stranger Things' star Sadie Sink. Despite widespread speculation among Marvel fans, the actress has remained tight-lipped about her character.

Sink admitted that keeping the secret had become increasingly difficult as the film's promotional campaign gathered pace. "Now that I have to talk about it all day, it is a little bit more difficult than I thought," she said.

With a more emotionally vulnerable Spider-Man, high-profile Marvel crossovers and one of the franchise's best-kept casting secrets, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is aiming to keep audiences guessing until it swings into theatres on July 31. REUTERS
