Misha Japanwala brings Pakistani artistry to Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'
Artist designs two sculptural pieces worn by Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy

Pakistani artist Misha Japanwala achieved a remarkable milestone for Pakistan by collaborating with the creative team behind Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey to create two sculptural pieces worn by Lupita Nyong'o in her portrayal of Helen of Troy.
Japanwala shared a feature by W Magazine on Instagram alongside behind-the-scenes images documenting the sculpting process and her attendance at The Odyssey fashion event.
“The Odyssey — The honour of a lifetime to contribute to Christopher Nolan’s vision and work with the legend Ellen Mirojnick and Sara O’Donnell to create these two very special sculptural works that adorn Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy!”, she wrote.
She also thanked Nyong’o for championing her work, adding: “Thank you Lupita for championing my work, and to the costume designers for trusting me to bring these pieces to life. A dream come true to be a tiny part of this monumental film and cinematic history. I still can’t believe it’s real”.
Describing the collaboration, W Magazine detailed Japanwala’s creative process behind the designs. “Dressing the face that launched ships presented an initial challenge: Helen had to feel enigmatic, almost otherworldly, yet fit the film's grounded vision. "We really had to get down to the realism of that queen," said Mirojnick.
The magazine added that Nyong’o recommended her friend, artist and fashion designer Misha Japanwala, who is known for her sculptural body casts that celebrate all shapes.
Japanwala also designed a bespoke gold choker for Helen’s final look: “Helen's final gleaming gold look—a choker, also by Japanwala, and a chainmail-like caftan-gown—provides a striking bookend, as she bids farewell to Telemachus and sends her wistful regards to Penelope”.
This is not the first time Japanwala's work has received international recognition. In 2022, Vogue India featured her bridal look, which paid homage to her signature sculptural breastplate aesthetic.
Earlier, in 2021, she designed a custom gold breastplate and arm cuff for Cardi B, worn in the music video for Rumors, the rapper's collaboration with Lizzo.
Japanwala's contribution to one of Hollywood's most anticipated films marks another significant milestone in her growing international career. Her work continues to showcase Pakistani artistry on the world stage, bringing greater international recognition to Pakistan's contemporary creative talent.
