Generator fumes kill two labourers in Korangi

Two young labourers died while four others were hospitalised after a room filled with generator fumes in Bhittai Colony near Korangi Crossing on Tuesday, police said.

The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Zaman Town police station, where six workers residing in a house in Sector B were overcome by smoke from a generator while they slept.

According to police, the victims had switched on an LPG generator following a power outage early in the morning and went to sleep. Hours later, a man entering the house found them unconscious and alerted others, prompting their immediate transfer to a nearby hospital via ambulances.

Hospital officials said two of the victims, identified as 18-year-old Nadeem and Waqas, were in critical condition and could not be revived despite efforts to save them. The remaining four - Dilbar, Ameen, Ubaid and Faizan - regained consciousness after receiving treatment.

PS Zaman Town SHO Ayaz Khan said the affected labourers were employed at a local eatery and were living together in the quarters. Most of them belonged to Nawabshah, while one was a resident of Hyderabad.

A neighbour told police that electricity supply had been suspended in the area early in the morning, after which the workers turned on the generator before going to sleep, leading to the accumulation of toxic fumes inside the room.

Police visited the site and sealed the premises after conducting an initial investigation. Police said further inquiry into the tragedy was underway.
