Newborn survives rare eye tumour
A team of doctors at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital successfully performed a rare, emergency operation on a three-day-old new-born suffering from an aggressive congenital eye tumour, saving the infant's life.
The baby, who belongs to a village in Jhelum district, was brought to the hospital shortly after birth with a quickly enlarging tumour affecting one eye. After an immediate clinical evaluation, specialists decided that immediate surgery was the only option to prevent the disease from progressing and causing potentially fatal complications.
The complex operation was carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Tayyab Afghani, Dr Faizan Tahir, Dr Ali Raza Syed and Dr Aiman, with support from anaesthetists, nurses and other healthcare professionals. As the tumour had reached an advanced stage, surgeons were forced to remove the affected eye to completely excise the mass and save the child's life.
