Mayo Hospital MS 'detained' in anti-corruption probe
The controversy surrounding Lahore's Mayo Hospital intensified on Monday after the hospital's Medical Superintendent (MS), Dr Abdul Mudabbir Rehman, was reportedly taken into custody by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) for questioning in connection with an inquiry into alleged corruption.
The development came after a video circulated on social media purportedly showing an alleged exchange of money inside the MS office.
According to sources, Anti-Corruption officials arrived at Mayo Hospital and escorted Dr Rehman for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation.
They said the MS was interrogated over allegations of bribery and CCTV footage allegedly linked to the case.
However, the Anti-Corruption Establishment had not officially disclosed the specific allegations against the MS or the legal status of the proceedings by the time this report was filed.
The investigation follows a complaint submitted to the Director General of the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment, seeking a transparent and impartial probe into alleged corruption, abuse of authority and misuse of official powers at the hospital.
A copy of the complaint, available with The Express Tribune, alleges that a video circulating on social media appears to show a hospital vendor handing over cash to a hospital employee in the presence of the Medical Superintendent.
The complainant alleges that the employee receiving the money is associated with the MS.
The complaint requests investigators to obtain the original video footage, conduct a forensic examination and determine whether any offences under anti-corruption laws have been committed.
It also urges investigators to examine an alleged financial transaction involving Rs300,000 reportedly received by a hospital employee earning a monthly salary of about Rs35,000.
The complainant has asked authorities to determine the source of the funds, the purpose of the payment and whether any government official or private individual unlawfully benefited from the transaction.
The application further claims that additional videos and audio recordings allegedly contain conversations relating to financial dealings involving the MS and his driver.
It requests that the material be secured, subjected to forensic analysis and included in the official investigation, with legal action initiated if evidence of corruption, abuse of authority or financial loss to the public exchequer is established.
Mayo Hospital MS Dr Mudabbir not taken into custody, says Anti-Corruption director
The Director of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), Lahore, has said that Mayo Hospital Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Mudabbir was not taken into custody.
According to the director, Dr Mudabbir was summoned to the ACE office only for questioning.
ACE sources said Dr Mudabbir would return to his office shortly after the questioning was completed.
