Suspect held in foreign woman rape case

Mother of three-year-old dies at hospital after attending private party

KARACHI:

Darakhshan police have arrested a man nominated in a case involving the alleged rape of a foreign woman, officials said on Sunday.

The suspect, identified as Adi Mahmood, is a resident of Mahmoodabad and works in sanitation services in Clifton. Police said he belongs to the Christian community.

PS Darakhshan SHO Rashid said the woman, believed to be around 50 years old, had taken the suspect along and later invited him to her apartment to show him her pet dogs, where subjected her to sexual assault.

The suspect has been taken into custody and handed over to the investigation police for further proceedings.

Separarely, a 35-year-old woman died during treatment after being brought in critical condition to a private hospital in Clifton, police said.

The deceased, identified as Ayesha Zeenat, wife of Anwar Shah, was a resident of Quaidabad and mother of a three-year-old child.

According to PS Boat Basin SHO Muhammad Riaz, the woman had left home on Saturday night with a friend, saying she was going to attend an engagement ceremony, but did not return.

Police said she had attended a private gathering in Clifton, where two unidentified persons later dropped her at the hospital in critical condition and fled.

Investigators suspect she may have died of a drug overdose; however, the exact cause will be determined after a post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case against unidentified suspects on the complaint of the victim's brother and said efforts are underway to trace those involved.
