Art exhibit celebrates Sufi heritage

Event showcases contemporary paintings inspired by Sufism and cultural heritage

ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) recently hosted a one-day painting exhibition titled "Sufism and Culture", celebrating the universal ideals of Sufism alongside the rich cultural heritage of Punjab through contemporary visual art.

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani inaugurated the exhibition, which featured more than 30 paintings by Aiman Atta, daughter of Senator Maulana Attaur Rehman, and noted artist Rumi. The artworks explored themes of peace, spirituality, love, tolerance and Pakistan's diverse cultural traditions.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Gillani commended the initiative, saying that promoting the values of peace, harmony and coexistence through art was particularly significant in the contemporary world. He observed that Sufism continued to inspire humanity with its enduring message of compassion, tolerance and mutual respect, adding that exhibitions of this nature played an important role in fostering cultural understanding and encouraging positive social values.

The Senate Chairman also praised the artistic vision and creativity of Aiman Atta and Rumi for presenting the essence of Sufism and cultural heritage in a thoughtful and inspiring manner.

Director General of the Pakistan National Council of the Arts, Muhammad Ayoub Jamali, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to promoting art, culture and creativity by providing opportunities for both emerging and established artists. He said such exhibitions strengthened cultural dialogue, encouraged artistic expression and highlighted Pakistan's rich and diverse cultural identity.

The exhibition attracted a large number of artists, students, art enthusiasts and members of the public, who appreciated the originality, creativity and artistic excellence of the works on display. Visitors also lauded the exhibition for its engaging interpretation of Sufism and Punjab's cultural heritage through contemporary visual expression.

Among those in attendance were Senator Attaul Haq Darwish, Senator Abdul Qadir, Senator Dilawar Khan, Director General PNCA Muhammad Ayoub Jamali, as well as prominent artists, distinguished guests and senior officials.

The exhibition sought to celebrate the universal values of Sufism through art while promoting Pakistan's rich cultural heritage and encouraging meaningful artistic dialogue.
