Robbers confess, Rs20m loot still missing in Dr Akash case

Three suspects sent on 7-day remand as police hunt absconding members

KARACHI:

Police have admitted that the Rs20 million looted from Dr Akash during the Clifton Teen Talwar robbery, in which he was shot dead, has not yet been recovered, while three arrested suspects have allegedly confessed to their involvement in the incident.

A preliminary investigation report submitted before the Judicial Magistrate South revealed that police have declared three suspects, including a woman, as absconders and are continuing efforts to arrest other members of the alleged gang.

The report stated that the arrested suspects - Suresh alias Sagar, Ram Chand and Anil - confessed during interrogation to robbing Dr Akash and firing shots during the incident. The suspects were initially arrested in an arms case and were later nominated in the murder case following their alleged confession.

According to the police report, the suspects told investigators that they had targeted a person who had withdrawn money from a bank near Teen Talwar. After snatching the cash, a security guard opened fire at them, prompting the suspects to retaliate before fleeing the scene.

The suspects allegedly told police that they later learned that a person had died due to their firing. Following their statement, they were nominated in the case of Dr Akash's killing.

Police informed the court that they still had to recover the looted Rs20 million, arrest the remaining suspects and conduct an identification parade of the arrested accused.

The report described the suspects as habitual criminals and said they were also being questioned in connection with other cases.
