Carey Mulligan has joined the cast of Focus Features' upcoming adaptation of The Bell Jar, adding another acclaimed name to the project led by singer Billie Eilish in her feature film acting debut.
According to Variety, Mulligan will portray Mrs. Greenwood, the mother of protagonist Esther Greenwood, in the adaptation of Sylvia Plath's acclaimed novel.
The film will be directed by Sarah Polley, whose previous work includes the Oscar-winning Women Talking.
Although Focus Features has not officially announced the casting, sources told Variety that Mulligan has signed on to the production.
The film is being produced by Plan B, Studiocanal and Joy Coalition, with reports also suggesting that Heated Rivalry actor Connor Storrie will join the ensemble cast.
Mulligan joins the project following an Emmy Award nomination for her performance in the second season of Netflix's Beef. The actress has earned three Academy Award nominations during her career for An Education, Promising Young Woman and Maestro.
She also received critical acclaim for her role opposite Oscar Isaac in the latest season of Beef and was recently nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Ballad of Wallis Island, another Focus Features production.
Mulligan's extensive film credits include Saltburn, Drive, Shame, Inside Llewyn Davis, Far from the Madding Crowd, Suffragette, Mudbound and She Said.
The adaptation marks a significant milestone for Billie Eilish as she makes her first appearance in a feature film, bringing Sylvia Plath's celebrated novel to the big screen under Polley's direction, with one of Britain's most respected actresses now joining the cast.
