Tyler Perry is facing renewed public scrutiny after an attorney representing two men who have filed separate lawsuits against the filmmaker alleged that additional aspiring male actors could have similar claims. The comments have intensified attention on the ongoing legal battle, although no court has determined that Perry committed any wrongdoing and he continues to strongly deny all allegations against him.
The latest claims were made by attorney Jonathan J Delshad, who represents individuals involved in separate legal actions against Perry. During legal arguments connected to the case, Delshad reportedly argued that there could be other people who experienced similar alleged misconduct and suggested that Lionsgate, which has been named as a co defendant in litigation linked to the allegations, should remain part of the proceedings.
According to reports, Delshad argued that the company should have been aware of alleged past misconduct involving Perry. Those statements remain allegations made by counsel during active litigation and have not been established as fact by any court.
The legal dispute currently centres on two separate lawsuits. Model Mario Rodriguez is reportedly seeking $77m in damages in a sexual battery lawsuit, while actor Derek Dixon has filed a separate lawsuit seeking $260m. Combined, the two lawsuits seek $337m in damages, although the amounts requested do not indicate liability or guarantee that any damages will be awarded.
Dixon's allegations are connected in part to his work on the television drama The Oval, which was created by Perry. His lawsuit alleges that Perry used his influential position within the entertainment industry to create a coercive and sexually exploitative dynamic. Perry has categorically denied those allegations.
Perry's legal team has consistently rejected both lawsuits. His attorneys have described the claims as false, without factual or legal merit and financially motivated. Attorney Matthew Boyd has publicly characterised one of the lawsuits as an attempted financial shakedown and stated that Perry would vigorously contest the allegations in court.
The legal proceedings have attracted widespread attention because Perry is one of Hollywood's most influential producers, filmmakers and studio owners. Over several decades, he has built a successful entertainment empire spanning films, television series and stage productions, while also becoming widely recognised for creating and portraying the Madea character.
The involvement of Lionsgate has added another dimension to the case. One of the key legal questions being argued is whether the company could bear any responsibility if it knew, or reasonably should have known, about alleged misconduct. That issue remains unresolved and will ultimately depend on evidence presented during the legal process and decisions made by the court.
