'House of the Dragon' Season 3 Episode 3 review: Rhaenyra faces growing pressure as rule is tested
Rhaenyra confront political turmoil, financial strain and mounting personal pressures in King's Landing

Queen Rhaenyra's grip on power comes under increasing strain in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3, as political pressures, personal grief and growing unrest begin to shape her reign.
The latest episode, titled Rhaenyra Triumphant, is a character-focused instalment that explores the queen's increasingly fragile state of mind.
The episode relies heavily on Ramin Djawadi's score to reinforce Rhaenyra's emotional decline, with unsettling music accompanying visions of her late son Jace and the mounting pressures of ruling from King's Landing.
Rhaenyra quickly discovers the crown's financial difficulties, learning the treasury has been emptied while the city faces shortages of food, candles and other essential supplies.
As petitioners appeal for help, she also clashes with Lord Corlys Velaryon, who asks her to legitimise his sons, Alyn and Addam. Rhaenyra refuses, citing the political risks surrounding questions of legitimacy within her own family.
Corlys openly challenges the decision, telling her: "Your son Joffrey is a bastard. Your son Lucerys, who I accepted as my heir, was a bastard. Your son Jacaerys lived and died a bastard. Say aloud the reason your children deserve what mine are denied."
Seeking to restore authority, Rhaenyra hosts a banquet for the nobility, serving roasted rats to highlight the suffering of the smallfolk while ordering food and wealth to be redistributed across the city.
The episode concludes with a strategic setback after Rhaenyra discovers she has been deceived by Ormund Hightower, who sends a decoy in place of Prince Daeron before capturing Tumbleton.
Kain writes that the twist reinforces the conflict's continuing uncertainty while advancing Rhaenyra's gradual transformation as the war intensifies.
The eight-episode season airs weekly on Sundays on HBO, with the season finale scheduled for August 9, 2026.
