FSC moved against marriage age ordinance

LAHORE:

A petition has been filed in the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) seeking to declare provisions of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance, 2026, which prescribe 18 years as the minimum age for marriage, illegal and repugnant to Islamic injunctions.

The petition was filed by Mufti Aslam through his counsel, Advocate Mudassar Chaudhry. The petitioner made the governor of Punjab, through the secretary, along with other respondents, parties to the case.

According to the petition, Sections 2(d) and 3 of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance, 2026, are contrary to the Constitution as well as the injunctions of Islam.
