Fisherman who died in Indian jail laid to rest

The body of a Pakistani fisherman who died while imprisoned in India after five years of detention was brought back to Karachi on Saturday and laid to rest at Mowach Goth cemetery following his funeral at Badr Ground, Keamari.

The funeral prayer of 75-year-old Ismail, son of Ibrahim, was attended by family members, relatives and local residents. The deceased was later buried amid scenes of grief as relatives expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

According to his son-in-law Abdul Ghani, Ismail was a fisherman by profession and had gone to sea in 2021 aboard a fishing vessel when it was intercepted by the Indian Navy. The crew members were subsequently detained and transferred to prison in India.

He said Ismail remained in custody for years and passed away during detention. The family believes his death was natural, as he was a diabetic patient. The body was handed over to Pakistani authorities at the Wagah border.

Separately, Coastal Media Centre spokesperson Kamal Shah said that around 80 fishermen from Sindh remain imprisoned in Indian jails.
