Cholera outbreak claims two lives in Bajaur
Health Department launches emergency response with water testing, medical aid

A suspected cholera outbreak has devastated a single family in the Banda Gai area of Tehsil Utman Khel, claiming the lives of two young sisters and hospitalizing eight others, prompting swift emergency measures by local health authorities.
The affected family, originally from Lower Dir, fell severely ill after what health officials suspect was cholera or acute watery diarrhea. Tragedy struck when nine-year-old Alisha Bibi and her four-year-old sister Pakiza Bibi succumbed to the infection. The remaining ten family members, including other children and adults, were immediately shifted to Timergara Hospital for urgent treatment, where they continue to receive medical care.
In response to the crisis, the District Health Department acted promptly on the directives of Deputy Commissioner Bajaur Shahid Ali and District Health Officer Bajaur. The Outbreak Response Team visited the affected locality without delay, collecting water samples for laboratory testing to identify the source of contamination. Teams also distributed essential medicines, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), and other critical medical supplies to the impacted families and surrounding households.
Health officials have intensified surveillance in the area, focusing on rapid detection of new cases. Awareness campaigns are underway to educate residents on preventive measures, including the importance of using clean drinking water, practicing regular handwashing, maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, and seeking immediate medical help for symptoms like severe diarrhea and vomiting.
The department has assured the public that the situation is under close monitoring. All possible medical facilities and logistical support are being extended to prevent further spread of the disease.
