KARACHI:

Anti-Corruption authorities have launched an investigation into the benami properties and bank accounts of former Yellow Line BRT Project director Zamir Abbasi in connection with an alleged Rs8.5 billion corruption case.

According to a progress report submitted to court by Investigating Officer Muhammad Sher Zaman, three major construction components of the Yellow Line BRT were reviewed. They included the New Jam Sadiq Bridge, Depot One at Dawood Chowrangi, and Depot Two near Indus Hospital.

The report stated that there was likelihood of concealed assets, bank accounts and properties belonging to the accused. It alleged that financial discipline in the projects was grossly ignored in collusion with others. Former project director Zamir Abbasi and director procurement Jhamman Das allegedly misused their authority to benefit contractors.

Officials said Rs8.5 billion in financial assistance was released without any bank guarantee, causing losses to the national exchequer. Evidence also exists against contractors and other officials involved. Authorities added that investigations into Abbasi's benami properties and accounts are ongoing.
