Michael Caine’s AI-generated voice narrates new 'The Odyssey' audiobook before Nolan’s movie

Michael Caine’s AI-generated voice will narrate a new audiobook adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, released ahead of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film based on the ancient epic.

The AI audiobook, created by ElevenLabs, launched on the company’s ElevenReader app and uses a replica of Caine’s voice as the narrator. The project was produced entirely through artificial intelligence tools, including AI-generated voices, music and sound effects, creating a 13-hour immersive version of the classic Greek poem.

ElevenLabs developed the audiobook as a companion piece to Nolan’s highly anticipated The Odyssey movie, allowing audiences to explore the original story before the film arrives in cinemas. The production features a cast of around 20 AI-generated characters from ElevenLabs’ voice library.

Dustin Blank, ElevenLabs’ head of partnerships, said the company selected Caine’s voice because of his iconic status and connection to audiences worldwide. The actor previously licensed his voice and likeness to ElevenLabs through its Iconic Marketplace, where creators and companies can use approved digital versions of public figures.

According to ElevenLabs, Caine was consulted about the project and approved the use of his voice and promotional materials. The company said its agreements are based on consent and compensation, with creators paid when their voices are used.

Caine described The Odyssey as one of the greatest stories ever told and said the AI adaptation brings the classic tale to modern audiences through new technology.

The project follows ElevenLabs’ previous AI audiobook experiment featuring a replica of Judy Garland’s voice narrating The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The company believes AI could help create larger-scale audiobook productions with smaller teams and shorter timelines.

With Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation generating significant interest, ElevenLabs hopes its AI-powered version of The Odyssey will introduce the legendary story to a new generation of listeners.
