Music industry executive Clive Davis, whose career helped shape generations of artists including Whitney Houston, has died at the age of 94.

According to reports, Davis died following age-related illnesses after a brief hospitalisation in May. His longtime representative, Aliza Rabinoff, confirmed the news in a statement, saying he “passed away peacefully from age-related illness … surrounded by his family and loved ones.”

Davis was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern music. He had reportedly accumulated a fortune of approximately $850 million through a career that spanned more than five decades across the pop, rock, R&B and soul genres.

After beginning his professional career as a lawyer, Davis joined Columbia Records and rose to become president of the label in the late 1960s. During his tenure, he signed or championed artists including Janis Joplin, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Aerosmith and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Following his departure from Columbia Records, Davis founded Arista Records, where he played a key role in launching Whitney Houston's career.

He also worked closely with Barry Manilow and helped revive Aretha Franklin's commercial success. Other artists associated with Davis included Patti Smith, Alan Parsons, Kenny G and Sarah McLachlan.

His influence extended into hip-hop through the signing of The Notorious B.I.G. and his collaboration with Sean Combs in developing Bad Boy Records.

In 2000, Davis founded J Records, which helped launch artists such as Alicia Keys and Luther Vandross before becoming part of RCA Music Group. He later served as chief creative officer at Sony Music.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932, Davis is survived by his four children, Fred, Lauren, Mitch and Doug. In his 2013 autobiography, The Soundtrack of My Life, he publicly revealed his bisexuality.
