MIRPURKHAS:

Fifteen suspected Afghan nationals were detained during a joint operation conducted by intelligence and law enforcement agencies in Chachro tehsil of Tharparkar district on Sunday, police sources said.

According to officials, the operation targeted Afghan families residing in the vicinity of Chachro police station. During the raid, authorities scrutinised residency records and identity documents of several people, following which 15 suspects were taken into custody.

The detainees were later shifted to Karachi for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Local residents claimed that most of the detained individuals had been living in the area for nearly two decades and were primarily engaged in the furniture business.

However, police sources said authorities were also probing allegations of possible involvement in other unlawful activities, although no official confirmation has been issued in this regard.

Investigators are reportedly examining alleged irregularities in identity documents, including the use of incorrect or fake addresses on national identity cards.

Sources further revealed that transactions involving government land and residential properties are also under scrutiny as part of a broader legal review.

Meanwhile, some residents have urged authorities to launch similar verification drives in other parts of Tharparkar, particularly in Mithi, to assess the legal status and documentation of foreign nationals residing in the district.

No formal statement has yet been issued by the law enforcement agencies regarding the operation, while investigations are said to be ongoing.
