Wanted suspect climbs palm tree to evade arrest

Video of 60-foot palm tree operation goes viral on social media

DERA GHAZI KHAN:

A proclaimed offender wanted in more than 20 criminal cases was arrested after climbing a 60-foot-high palm tree in an attempt to evade police in Kot Chutta tehsil of Dera Ghazi Khan, officials said.

Police said the suspect, identified as Kaleem Dumra, was spotted in the livestock market area of Kot Chutta following a tip-off.

A police team moved to arrest him, but he allegedly fled on a motorcycle, triggering a chase that continued into the jurisdiction of Choti Police Station.

Police said the suspect reached Basti Naseer near his residence, where he called out to relatives and supporters before climbing a palm tree approximately 60 feet high and refusing to come down.

As the standoff continued, Kot Chutta SHO Hamidullah Khulng repeatedly urged the suspect to surrender, but he refused. Rescue 1122 was then called to assist in the operation.

Rescue officials initially attempted to reach the suspect using a ladder, but the unusual height of the tree made the effort unsuccessful.

After completing safety arrangements, police and Rescue 1122 personnel launched a joint operation and secured the area.

Authorities eventually tied safety ropes around the tree and carefully cut its lower section, enabling them to bring the suspect safely to the ground without injury.

Rescue officials provided first aid to the suspect before handing him over to police custody.

Speaking to media, SHO Hamidullah Khulng said the accused was wanted in multiple criminal cases and had climbed the tree out of fear of arrest.
