Hugh Jackman joins Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island remake as Long John Silver in a major Hollywood project

Hollywood heavyweights Hugh Jackman and Ridley Scott are teaming up for a new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure novel Treasure Island, a high-profile project that is already generating significant industry buzz.

According to Deadline, Scott is attached to direct the feature film, while Jackman is set to portray the legendary pirate Long John Silver, one of literature’s most iconic characters. The screenplay has been written by acclaimed screenwriter Jack Thorne, whose recent projects have further elevated his profile in the entertainment industry.

The package is expected to attract strong interest from major studios as it heads to the marketplace. Reports indicate that 20th Century Studios was initially given an opportunity to pursue the project but ultimately passed. The decision was reportedly linked to Disney’s continued focus on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, with the studio avoiding a potentially competing pirate-themed property.

Originally published in 1883, Treasure Island remains one of the most influential adventure novels ever written. The story follows young Jim Hawkins as he discovers a treasure map and embarks on a dangerous voyage in search of hidden riches. Along the way, he encounters the charismatic but unpredictable Long John Silver, leading to a battle of trust, deception and survival.

The novel has inspired numerous film and television adaptations over the decades, including Disney’s animated sci-fi reimagining Treasure Planet in 2002. However, Scott’s version is expected to offer a fresh take on the beloved story.
