KARACHI:

The city administration has intensified enforcement of a ban on bathing in the Hub Canal, with more than 35 people arrested for violating the restriction, officials said on Sunday.

According to a handout issued by the Karachi commissioner's office, Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has directed district administrations and police to ensure strict monitoring and implementation of the ban.

A report submitted by the deputy commissioner stated that Manghopir police had launched a crackdown against violators, arresting over 35 people. Cases have been registered against the suspects under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Officials warned people to avoid visiting the canal area for bathing, swimming or gathering in groups, adding that legal action would be taken without any leniency against violators.

The administration also advised parents to keep a close watch on their children and prevent them from going near the canal to avoid any untoward incidents as well as legal consequences.

Police said multiple FIRs had been registered in connection with the violations, and enforcement actions would continue to ensure public safety.
